How to Keep Going, Even When It Gets Tough

Pursuing your dreams is exhilarating, but it's also a long and sometimes overwhelming journey. Whether you're building a business, launching a creative project, or working on a passion event like I did with Muve Fest, staying motivated day in and day out can be a challenge. There are moments when doubt creeps in, when naysayers make you question yourself, or when the sheer size of your goal feels too daunting.

If you've ever found yourself stuck or struggling to stay on track with your dreams, you're not alone. The good news? There are strategies that can help you keep the fire alive, push through tough days, and ultimately achieve your vision. In this blog, I'll share 5 keys that helped me stay motivated while building Muve Fest, and that can help you stay focused on your own dreams—no matter what obstacles come your way.

1. Create a Powerful "Why"

One of the most important steps to staying motivated in the long term is understanding your "why." This is the core reason you started your journey in the first place. It’s easy to lose sight of this when the road gets rough, but if you have a clear and meaningful "why," it becomes your anchor.

Take some time to reflect on your dream and ask yourself, "Why is this so important to me?" Maybe it's about financial freedom, helping others, or expressing your creative voice. Whatever it is, it should be something that deeply resonates with you.

How to put this into action:

  • Write down your "why" and keep it visible—whether it’s a sticky note on your computer or a vision board in your workspace.
  • Reflect on your “why” regularly. On days when you feel like giving up, come back to it as a reminder of why you started and what you're working toward.

Why this works: A strong "why" helps you refocus when the going gets tough. When you're connected to your deeper purpose, you’re more likely to push through obstacles and keep moving forward.

2. Break Down Your Big Vision into Small Milestones

Big dreams can feel overwhelming, especially when the finish line seems so far away. The key to making steady progress is breaking your larger goal into smaller, more manageable milestones. Every small win gives you a boost of confidence and energy to keep going.

Think of it like a marathon: You wouldn't focus only on the finish line the entire race. Instead, you concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other. Each step gets you closer, and each mile marker is a victory.

How to put this into action:

  • Break down your goal into monthly, weekly, or even daily tasks.
  • Celebrate your progress! Every milestone you reach is a step toward your big vision.
  • Keep a checklist or journal to track your accomplishments.

Why this works: Small wins give you a sense of momentum and keep you motivated. When you celebrate each achievement along the way, it creates positive reinforcement that encourages you to keep pushing forward.

3. Surround Yourself with a Supportive Tribe

Building your dream can be a lonely process if you're doing it in isolation. That’s why it’s crucial to surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision. Your support system can include friends, family, mentors, or colleagues—anyone who encourages you when you're feeling doubtful and holds you accountable when you need a push.

I was fortunate to have a friend who constantly reminded me to keep going when I felt like quitting. On days when self-doubt crept in, they were there to tell me, “You’ve got this. Keep showing up.”

How to put this into action:

  • Identify the people in your life who are positive and supportive of your goals.
  • Share your progress with them regularly. Let them know how they can support you, whether it’s by offering encouragement or helping you stay accountable.
  • Consider joining a mastermind group or finding an accountability partner who shares similar goals.

Why this works: No one can achieve their dreams alone. Having the right people in your corner helps you stay motivated, especially when things get tough. Their encouragement can give you the boost you need to keep going, and they can offer valuable perspective when you face challenges.

4. Practice Self-Compassion and Manage Stress

Chasing your dreams doesn’t mean working yourself into the ground. In fact, if you don’t manage stress and practice self-compassion, you’re more likely to burn out. It’s easy to be hard on yourself when things aren’t going perfectly, but treating yourself with kindness can help you sustain your energy for the long haul.

Building a dream takes time, and you won’t always be operating at 100%. Some days will be harder than others, and that’s okay. Learning to recharge and take care of yourself when you need it is key to staying motivated over time.

How to put this into action:

  • Incorporate stress-relief activities like mindfulness, yoga, or exercise into your daily routine.
  • Set boundaries with your work to ensure you have time to rest and recover.
  • Be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. Focus on progress, not perfection.

Why this works: Managing your stress and being compassionate with yourself allows you to maintain high energy levels. You’ll avoid burnout, stay motivated longer, and be able to enjoy the process more fully.

5. Visualize Success and Act "As If"

Visualization is a powerful tool that can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. When you regularly visualize yourself achieving your dream, you train your mind to believe it's possible. This shift in mindset helps you show up with confidence and take actions aligned with your success.

Even more powerful than visualization is acting “as if” you’ve already achieved your goal. If you were the person who had already succeeded, how would you think, feel, and behave? Start embodying that version of yourself now, and your actions will naturally align with your vision.

How to put this into action:

  • Spend a few minutes each day visualizing your dream coming true. Imagine yourself achieving success—what does it look like? How does it feel?
  • Act as if you are already that successful person. Make decisions from that mindset and watch how your confidence grows.

Why this works: When you can see your success in your mind, it becomes easier to make it a reality. Acting “as if” helps you tap into the mindset and habits that will lead you to your goal.

Final Thoughts: Keep Showing Up for Your Dream

Achieving your dream isn’t about waiting for motivation to strike—it’s about building consistent habits, surrounding yourself with the right people, and staying connected to your deeper purpose. Some days will be harder than others, but by using these five strategies, you can keep moving forward, even when the going gets tough.

Whether you're working on a personal goal or building something bigger like I did with Muve Fest, remember that progress is made by showing up every day, staying committed, and believing in yourself—even when it’s hard. You've got this. Keep going!
